Tails Will be Waggin' at Bark for Life May 19

May 07, 2018

Fido will bring the fight to cancer and fun to Riverstone with the return of Bark for Life presented by Lake Olympia Animal Hospital on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Everyone is invited out to The Club at Riverstone, 18353 University Boulevard, for our annual celebration of man’s best friend, canine cancer caregivers and cancer survivors benefitting the American Cancer Society.

Bark for Life will feature a short walk followed by canine performances from the Houston Disc Dogs. Pup- and family-friendly activities include a DJ, face painting, contests, inflatables, balloon twisters and food trucks — as well as vendors offering a variety of pooch-worthy items. Animal rescue organizations will be helping pets find “fur-ever” homes.

Even better, this year’s event is free with no registration fee for the walk. And (we can’t muzzle our excitement about this) the first 300 dogs registered will receive pup-friendly swag bags that even a mastiff will drool over.

Bark for Life recognizes that dogs can be essential to defeating cancer for some patients, as well as also falling victim to the deadly disease themselves.

According to the Animal Cancer Foundation, more than six million dogs are diagnosed with cancer each year. When it comes to humans with cancer, studies show that animal-assisted therapy can decrease anxiety and pain, lower blood pressure and help alleviate depression, while offering welcome companionship and a positive distraction from treatment schedules and worries.

Veterinarian clinics are on the front lines when it comes to defeating canine cancer, and we are thrilled to have our favorite three supporting the event. Lake Olympia Animal Hospital is our Top Dog sponsor for the second year in a row. In addition, Sugar Land Veterinary Specialists is a Golden Paw Sponsor and Sienna Plantation Animal Hospital is a Best in Show sponsor.

Our sponsors are key to helping us take a bite out of cancer. Last year we raised $4,500. This year we hope to make it an even $5,000.

Our other sponsors include Best in Show Sponsor Best Entertainers, while Sugar Land Dental Group & Orthodontics, Camp Bow Wow Sugar Land and Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Sienna have signed on as Bow Wow Sponsors.

Bring the entire family out (four-legged friends must be leashed) for a fun day where dogs are the stars and everyone helps to create a world where cancer doesn’t claim any more lives — human or canine.
