Fort Bend Children's Discovery Center Opens May 28

May 12, 2016

Children in Riverstone will soon have a convenient place to explore career options, math concepts and cultural diversity with the opening of the long-awaited Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center. A grand opening ceremony for the museum facility will take place at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, May 28, in Sugar Land.

Affiliated with the Children’s Museum of Houston, the Children’s Discovery Center, 198 Kempner Street, is located on the first floor of the 12,500-square-foot former container warehouse of the Imperial Sugar Refinery. The site is being redeveloped as a mixed-use lifestyle center called Imperial Market.

The new museum will feature six interactive displays for children, ages birth to 12, focusing on mathematics, cultural diversity, science, civic life and business, and toddler play. An outdoor exhibit, titled “Can I do That?” will open at a later date.

After the ribbon cutting, families can enjoy all of the museum’s exhibits including a virtual math adventure called Cyberchase – The Chase is On!, Tot*Spot for toddlers, Dragons & Fairies — a juxtaposition of Vietnamese folk tales and modern-day life, and the imagination-cranking How Does it Work?

Like the Houston museum, the Children’s Discovery Center will have a Kidtropolis exhibit where children can pretend to run for mayor, work in a diner, go grocery shopping, make a bank deposit, report for a newspaper, go to art school or assemble a car. Each kid company is sponsored by an associated Fort Bend County business such as a diner by Another Time Soda Fountain & Café and a news bureau by the Fort Bend Herald.

Admission to the grand opening is free and the first 500 children to arrive will receive t-shirts. For more information, visit www.fortbendchildrensdc.org

Imperial Market is an 850,000-square-foot upscale shopping, dining, entertainment and cultural destination on US Highway 90 located in Imperial, a Johnson Development Corp. master-planned community. Johnson also is the developer of Riverstone, the top-selling master-planned community in Texas.
