Accolade Alert: Both high schools were ranked in the top 12 of 97 Houston-area public high schools on a list compiled by Children at Risk, a local research and advocacy group. Clements, the top-ranking Fort Bend school, placed sixth on the list; Elkins placed 12th. Elkins was ranked third in Fort Bend. Judging criteria included graduation rates and scores on SAT exams, Advanced Placement tests and TAKS.
With a 2007-2008 enrollment of nearly 70,000 students at 67 campuses, Fort Bend ISD is the seventh-largest school district of the 1,037 public school districts in Texas. Families from around the world move to Fort Bend, drawn by the district’s reputation and its focus on student achievement and development. Students benefit from diverse and challenging academic and extracurricular activities.
One of the district’s greatest strengths lies in its multicultural diversity. Students in FBISD schools represent more than 25 different countries. Students and their families speak more than 80 different languages. Among its numerous honors, the district has 72 semi-finalists named in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program and four semi-finalists in the 2008 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Governor Rick Perry recognized FBISD as the “Fittest School District in Texas” in 2005 and 2006, and the district was a gold medal winner for Texas school districts in the governor’s Texas Round-Up Fitness Championship in 2007. Three times in the last five years, FBISD has been named one of the “100 Best Places in the United States” for a fine arts education.
America’s Promise Alliance recently named Sugar Land in conjunction with Fort Bend ISD as one of the “100 Best Communities in the Nation for Young People.” The winning communities are recognized for efforts to help young people succeed.
To address a variety of vocational interests as well as special learning needs, the district also includes the Technical Education Center, the M. R. Wood Alternative Learning Center and the Progressive High School.
